Counsellor and Psychotherapist Supervision

DTR now offer clinical supervision

Dreams to Realities (DTR) are delighted to announce that they now offer clinical supervision to qualified counsellors and psychotherapists.

Clinical supervision is an activity that brings skilled supervisor’s and supervisee’s together in order to reflect upon their practice. It is widely acknowledged that a positive supervisor – supervisee relationship enhances professional development.

Clinical supervision protects clients by involving an impartial third party in the work of a counsellor/ psychotherapist and client, helping them to reduce the risk of serious oversight, assisting the supervisee concerned to reflect on their own thoughts, feelings and behaviours and general approach with the client.

Counsellors and psychotherapists should receive regular clinical supervision – and dependent on clinical caseload this should be a minimum of one and a half hours per month. (BACP – BABCP)

What is the purpose of DTR’s clinical supervision?

DTR believe that the purpose of clinical supervision is to provide a safe and confidential environment for counsellor’s and psychotherapists to reflect on and discuss their work as well as personal and professional responses to their work. DTR’s main focus therefore is on supporting counsellor’s and psychotherapist’s personal and professional development and in helping them reflect on their practice.

Billy Shaw – As a fully trained clinical supervisor, I will oversee the casework and professional issues of supervisee’s, promoting the development of counselling skills. I will also address any legal or ethical issues within the supervisee’s practice.

Various models of supervision will be used to ensure that each supervisee attains specific and tailored supervision sessions to fully address their needs and requirements.

The main duties of DTR’s supervision are:

  • To establish contract/working agreement and maintain boundaries
  • To explore transference and counter transference in relation to the supervisee’s practice as well as within the supervisory relationship
  • To be more knowledgeable in relation to complex presenting issues, interventions and protocols
  • To focus on the here and now process between the supervisor and supervisee
  • To provide appropriate challenge of supervisee’s practice with a view to enhancing their learning
  • To challenge practice thought to be unethical or unhelpful
  • To encourage the supervisee to bring content relevant to their experience and prioritise the agenda
  • To provide quantitative and qualitative feedback
  • To encourage an emotional experience in processing
  • To monitor fitness to practice and self care
  • To ensure that effective record keeping is taking place
  • To ensure that the supervisee is keeping up to date with current developments within their chosen field of practice
